On NCIS there has been a running joke of Gibbs’ rules that his team must follow. Seemingly random and unending, these rules serve as the basis for Gibbs’ personal code of conduct and as lessons he passes down to his team. In the season finale, “Rule 51,” we not only see Gibbs break some of his rules but add a new, rather important one to the list.

NCIS has always been a show about family. Not in the traditional sense, obviously, but anyone who doubts that family is at the heart of this show really hasn’t been paying attention. Gibbs is the obvious patriarchal figure, stalwart, righteous, full of advice and sage wisdom that his team, his children if you will, follow without question. Ziva, McGee, Tony and Abby are the children, bickering individuals initially bonded by their common respect and devotion to Gibbs, which in turn became respect and devotion to each other. Ducky is the wise grandfather figure, the one man to give advice to the advice giver.
